Background of the Study
Oil exploration activities have been a major driver of economic growth in Nigeria; however, they also pose significant environmental and social challenges. In Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, the livelihood of fishing communities is increasingly jeopardized by the adverse impacts of oil exploration (Obi, 2023). Contamination of water bodies, loss of marine biodiversity, and disruption of traditional fishing practices have led to economic hardships for local fishermen (Ekene, 2024). The intersection of environmental degradation and socio-economic vulnerability has sparked debates over the sustainability of oil exploration in coastal regions. This study investigates how oil exploration affects the livelihood of fishing communities, examining both the environmental consequences and socio-economic repercussions. It utilizes empirical data, environmental assessments, and community narratives to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact on local fisheries. The study also explores possible mitigation strategies and policy reforms to restore and safeguard the livelihoods of affected communities (Uche, 2025).
Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Warri South, oil exploration has resulted in significant environmental degradation, adversely affecting the fishing communities’ ability to sustain their livelihoods. Water contamination, reduced fish stocks, and the loss of traditional fishing grounds have led to economic and social challenges for local fishermen (Ekene, 2024). The lack of effective environmental regulations and corporate accountability further exacerbates these challenges. There is an urgent need to investigate the direct impacts of oil exploration on the fisheries sector and propose remedial measures to mitigate these adverse effects (Uche, 2025).
